Meet the Maker : Colnago
Today marks the start of the Tour de France; an event many of us at The Merchant Fox are looking forward to every year.
With that being said, this week's "Meet the Maker" is slightly different. In a short article, we will attempt to discuss the rich and compelling history of Italian bicycle manufacturer Colnago. It all started with a young Ernesto Colnago, who at the age of 13, changed the date of birth on his documents so he could start working as a welder in a bicycle factory in Milano. A few years later, with the help of his father, he opened his first workshop at Via Giuseppe Garibaldi 10, in Cambiago - Milan.
In 1963, Ernesto Colnago met cycling legend Eddy Merckx, as he became the head mechanic for the Molteni team. This would mark the beginning of a long and fruitful relationship. Over the decades, Ernesto Colnago's bikes would go on to win 62 World Championships, 21 Big Tours, 38 Classic Races and 18 Olympic Medals. As recently as last year, Tadej Pogacar rode his Colnago V3RS into Paris wearing the Maillot Jaune. When the opportunity to work on a project with Colnago presented itself, we were extremely excited. Two brands that have made history in their areas. Colnago, capable of promoting the cycling of the new millennium with its inventions and Fox brothers, accredited as the creators of flannel. The C64 Frameset is truly a work of art featuring a bespoke Fox Brothers paintjob and great attention to detail all around. To read more about the frame and its components, click here.
